The Cincinnati Screw and Tap Company, formed in 1884, built a small milling machine for fluting taps. Neighboring shops were soon buying the new Cincinnati Miller. In 1889, the organization changed its name to the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company and began the manufacturing of Milling Machines and Cutting Grinders. Soon the Universal Dividing Head was developed. In 1900, the first positive all-geared feed change mechanism won a gold medal at the Paris Fair. Then came the first High Power type Milling Machines, fine examples of the principle of interchangeable unit manufacture. The advent of high speed steel coincided with the development of the High Power Milling Machines, but existing high speed cutters could not utilize that full cutting capacity. Extensive study and testing resulted in 'wide spaced' cutters and 'high power faced mills' recognized as standards today.
