'Johns-Manville built- up roofing systems are each designed for a specific set of conditions of substrate, designed life and roof slope. J-M roofing specifications cover a full range of organic felt roofing systems as well as asbestos felt systems.

For reasons of space limitations and because of superiority of inorganic asbestos felts as a roofing material, only asbestos filled roofing specifications covering the most prevalent sets of conditions are contained in this manual.

The asbestos felts used in Johns-Manville built- up asbestos roofing systems are composed primarily of asbestos, an inorganic mineral fiber. Unlike organic fibers, these solid asbestos fibers resist wicking moisture into the roofing system, are non-rotting, remain more stable under changing atmospheric conditions. Roofing systems based on asbestos felts have proven their superiority over many years. In addition to retaining a greater proportion of the membrane strength as they age, they can be left exposed to weather after their original top-coating of asphalt has disappeared.
