The dynamometer records the instantaneous load on the polished rod at all points of the upstroke and downstroke. It not only gives the peak load, minimum load, and polished rod horsepower, but also tells the peak torque on the gears and is the only positive way of counterbalancing to assure an equal peak torque on the up stroke and down stroke.
